Renewal (2020)
In late 2019 I was commissioned to write a piece for cello duet to be performed at a large gathering.
At the time, bushfires had been raging through Australia. We had endured weeks of grey and yellow skies and many were experiencing shock, fear, and grief about the loss of our environment.
A few days before it came for me to sit down and start writing, the ABC ran an article featuring photographs of plants beginning to grow again after the fires had swept through - small shoots of green sprouting in a blackened landscape.
I was inspired to compose something that was at once somber and hopeful, that represented the country beginning to heal after such devastation, that celebrated the landscape itself.
